JKR Kapit Explores Smart Traffic Light Solutions

KUCHING – The Public Works Department Sarawak Kapit Division held an engagement session with signal light service providers on 12 March 2026 to strengthen traffic management in Kapit.

The meeting took place at the Electrical Engineering Branch Meeting Room at JKR Headquarters in Wisma Saberkas.

Discussions centred on improving the current traffic light system and addressing increased congestion within the division.

During the session, officials explored plans to upgrade conventional traffic lights to smart traffic light systems.

The proposed technology uses adaptive signal control to respond to real-time traffic conditions, which helps reduce waiting times and improve overall traffic flow.

Smart traffic systems have gained wider use in several urban areas across Malaysia. For Kapit, the proposed upgrade represents a proactive step to manage growing vehicle numbers and improve road safety.

Officials also presented proposals to enhance traffic management at the Bukit Goram T-intersection. The location has been identified as a congestion point by residents, and the proposed improvements aim to create smoother vehicle movement while lowering risks for road users.

The engagement session aimed to strengthen cooperation between JKR and service providers. By bringing technical specialists together with government officials, the department hopes to develop practical solutions tailored to local conditions.

The initiative reflects the broader effort of the Sarawak Government to modernise infrastructure and adopt smart technologies in public services.

We expect improved signal systems to enhance safety and convenience for drivers and pedestrians as traffic levels in Kapit gradually increase.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, noting that better traffic management will help ease daily travel and improve access to businesses and services.

As discussions move forward, JKR Kapit plans to continue working with stakeholders to refine proposals and ensure the smart traffic system meets the needs of the local community.
