JKR Sarawak Architect Engagement Session Boosts Professionalism

KUCHING – The Sarawak Public Works Department JKR is continuing to strengthen coordination and professionalism within its architectural services through the organisation of the JKRS Architect and Assistant Engagement Session 2026, held here on Tuesday.

The engagement session was designed as a structured platform to promote shared understanding, collaboration, and alignment in carrying out architectural responsibilities and managing government building assets under JKR Sarawak. This initiative reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to enhancing internal governance and improving service delivery across the state.

A total of 121 participants took part in the session, comprising architects, Assistant Architectural Officers, and Draftsmen from all 12 JKR Sarawak divisions. The broad representation highlighted the department’s effort to ensure uniform work practices and consistent technical standards throughout Sarawak.

The session was attended by YBhg. Datu Adj. Prof. Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. Dr. Cassidy anak Morris, Director of Public Works Sarawak, together with Deputy Directors and senior management officers. Their presence demonstrated strong leadership support for initiatives aimed at strengthening professional capacity and operational efficiency within the architectural field.

During the programme, participants were briefed on the department’s overall direction, including current policies, guidelines, and strategic priorities related to architectural works. Discussions also covered building asset management, compliance requirements, and the importance of standardised documentation in achieving quality project outcomes.

A key component of the engagement session was the two-way discussion segment, which enabled divisional-level officers to highlight operational challenges and technical issues encountered during project implementation. These included site-specific constraints, coordination with other technical disciplines, and evolving regulatory requirements.

Officials noted that this interactive approach allows feedback from the field to be incorporated directly into continuous improvement efforts. By drawing on real-world experiences, JKR Sarawak aims to refine its procedures and strengthen decision-making at both divisional and headquarters levels.

The session also focused on clarifying work processes and technical expectations to improve efficiency and reduce inconsistencies. Emphasis was placed on professional ethics, accountability, and teamwork to support the successful delivery of architectural projects statewide.

According to JKR Sarawak, developing a competent and cohesive architectural team is essential to meeting the growing demand for public infrastructure while maintaining high standards of safety, functionality, and design quality. Architecture plays a vital role not only in construction, but also in long-term building performance and asset sustainability.

The department reiterated its commitment to strengthening governance frameworks and enhancing project delivery systems in line with Sarawak’s development aspirations. Continuous capacity building and professional engagement remain key components of this approach.

JKR Sarawak added that similar engagement programmes will continue to be organised as part of its broader strategy to strengthen institutional capacity, ensure service excellence, and respond effectively to the needs of stakeholders and the public.
