JKR Sarawak Director Inspects Shop Building Collapse Site in Sibu

SIBU – YBhg. Datu Adj Prof Ir Ts Gs Br PMr Dr Cassidy anak Morris, Director of the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), visited the site of a shop building collapse along Jalan Pahlawan, Sibu, on 25 February 2026 to assess the situation and review the safety of surrounding structures.

During the inspection, the director carried out visual observations of the affected block. Findings revealed that the entire building structure was in a dangerous condition and posed a high risk of further collapse.

Authorities have since advised the public to strictly follow safety instructions issued by the Sibu Municipal Council. Residents and visitors are urged not to enter the restricted zone to avoid potential hazards.

The incident has raised concerns about structural integrity and safety in older commercial areas. JKR Sarawak has reiterated its commitment to monitoring infrastructure conditions and ensuring that safety measures are enforced to protect the public.

Officials emphasised that precautionary steps are necessary to prevent accidents and safeguard lives. The department continues to work closely with local councils to identify risks and implement safety protocols in areas deemed vulnerable.

The collapse highlights the importance of regular inspections and maintenance of ageing buildings. JKR Sarawak has pledged to strengthen its oversight role, ensuring that infrastructure across the state meets safety standards and remains secure for public use.
