BETONG – The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak has taken steps to strengthen project governance through the Divisional One Month Pledge initiative, launched in Betong on 16 April 2026.
The pledge signing session, held at the JKR Betong Division Meeting Room, marked the first of its kind for the year and was aimed at ensuring contractors commit to delivering results within the first month of project implementation.
The initiative is designed to improve efficiency in project delivery, reduce risks of delays, and ensure that development benefits reach the people of Sarawak in a timely manner. JKR Sarawak emphasised that the pledge reflects its ongoing commitment to accountability and transparency in infrastructure projects.
Two major projects were included in this session. The first involves the extension of HT/LT reticulation towards future development areas in Tanjung Sebekut, Spaoh and surrounding locations under Contract No. DIV.XI/14/2026.
The second project focuses on upgrading the Community Rehabilitation Centre (PDK) in Betong, under Contract No. DIV.XI/WO/25/2026.
By requiring contractors to sign the pledge, JKR Sarawak aims to secure early commitment and establish clear expectations for project outcomes.
Officials noted that the pledge system will be closely monitored to ensure compliance with agreed timelines and standards.
The department explained that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance governance in public works, ensuring that infrastructure projects are not only completed on time but also meet quality requirements. The approach is expected to foster greater trust between contractors, government agencies and the public.
Community leaders in Betong have welcomed the move, highlighting that improved governance in project delivery will directly benefit residents by providing reliable infrastructure and facilities.
The rehabilitation centre upgrade, in particular, is seen as a significant step towards supporting vulnerable groups and strengthening social services in the division.
Observers noted that the One Month Pledge initiative could serve as a model for other divisions, reinforcing Sarawak’s commitment to efficient and transparent development.
By setting clear benchmarks and monitoring progress closely, JKR Sarawak is working to ensure that public funds are utilised effectively and that projects contribute meaningfully to community well-being.
The department reaffirmed its motto, “We Build For You,” as a reminder of its dedication to serving the people of Sarawak through sustainable and accountable infrastructure development.
