BETONG – The Road Transport Department JPJ Betong Branch has increased its presence on the roads of Betong by conducting daily enforcement operations to ensure that traffic laws are complied with and road safety is enhanced in Betong Town.
The operations are conducted by the JPJ Betong Operations Unit, which carries out patrols and monitoring at strategic locations in the town. The patrols are done on a daily basis and aim at identifying traffic offenders, as well as ensuring that vehicles on the road are roadworthy.
In the latest enforcement exercise carried out on Sunday, a total of 70 vehicles were inspected. The exercise included the inspection of private and commercial vehicles operating in the Betong area. The officers inspected the driving licences, road tax, insurance, as well as the condition of the vehicles.
Analysis of the results of the operation indicated that there were a number of offences of concern. Some of the most frequent offences that were identified included motorists driving without a valid driving licence, vehicles with expired road tax, and vehicles that were operating without active insurance cover. Other offences that were identified included offences that were technical in nature.
JPJ has always emphasized that driving without proper documentation and insurance not only violates the law but also poses a significant risk to road users in the event of an accident. The data on the national transport network has always shown that driving without a licence and driving faulty vehicles increases the rate of accidents.
In light of these results, JPJ Sarawak reiterated its commitment to enforcement. The department said that operations will continue to be carried out on a daily basis periodically in a bid to ensure that more people comply with road traffic regulations.
JPJ stressed that enforcement is not just about summoning offenders, but also about instilling good driving behaviour among the rakyat. By being visible on the roads, the department hopes to discourage traffic offenders and encourage drivers to be more responsible for their vehicles and their actions on the roads.
Traffic enforcement operations like these are part of a national road safety strategy, which is managed by the Ministry of Transport. The strategy focuses on preventive approaches, public awareness, and enforcement, especially in urban areas and where traffic activity is higher.
Motorists are reminded to make sure that their driving licences are valid, their vehicles are insured, and their road tax is up to date. Vehicle maintenance is also encouraged to avoid vehicle breakdowns that may result in loss of lives.
JPJ Betong also stated that enforcement squads will continue to be active in the district, and road users can expect the usual inspections as part of efforts to maintain order on the roads of Sarawak. The authorities called for the cooperation of the people during inspections and considered enforcement as a community responsibility.
