MIRI, Dec 31 – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Miri Branch, together with the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Miri, carried out a large-scale integrated enforcement operation on New Year’s Eve to ensure road safety and public order across Miri City.
The operation, known as the New Year’s Eve Integrated Ops, was conducted in response to concerns over illegal motorcycle racing and other traffic violations, which are often reported during festive celebrations. Enforcement teams focused on several hotspot areas identified as frequent gathering points for reckless riders and road users who ignore traffic laws.
The integrated operation began on the night of Wednesday, December 31, 2025, and continued until 7.00 am on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Throughout the night, JPJ and JSPT officers maintained a strong presence on major roads and strategic locations around the city to deter dangerous behaviour and promote responsible driving.
During the operation, a total of 100 vehicles of various types were stopped and inspected. Checks were carried out on drivers’ licences, road tax status, vehicle condition and overall compliance with road regulations. As a result of these inspections, 25 motorcycles were detained and taken to the Miri Traffic Police Station for further investigation and action.
Authorities found several serious offences during the operation. These included riding without a valid driving licence, expired road tax, underage individuals operating vehicles, as well as other offences related to vehicle technical conditions. According to enforcement officers, such violations not only break the law but also put the lives of riders, passengers and other road users at risk.
JPJ Sarawak stressed that operations like this are essential, especially during major celebrations such as New Year’s Eve, when traffic volume increases and the risk of accidents is higher. The department reminded all road users that traffic laws are in place to protect everyone and must be respected at all times, not only during festive periods.
In a statement, JPJ Sarawak expressed its deepest appreciation and gratitude to the Royal Malaysian Police, particularly the JSPT Miri, for their close cooperation, commitment and strong support throughout the operation. The joint effort, authorities said, reflects the shared responsibility of enforcement agencies to maintain safety, peace and order on the roads.
The department also urged the public, especially young riders, to think carefully about their actions and avoid illegal racing and reckless behaviour. As the new year begins, JPJ and the police reaffirmed their commitment to continue enforcement activities and awareness efforts to reduce accidents and create safer roads for all Malaysians.
