Miri is seeing tighter road checks as the Road Transport Department Malaysia ramps up enforcement for Hari Raya Aidilfitri travel.
On March 22, officers from JPJ Sarawak, through its Miri branch, inspected 112 vehicles across Miri. The checks flagged common issues, expired licences, outdated road tax, missing insurance, and technical faults. Authorities confirmed action was taken against those who broke the rules.
This operation in Miri ties into a broader push across the state. JPJ Sarawak has deployed hundreds of officers during the festive period, combining enforcement with outreach to keep roads safer. The focus isn’t only on penalties; it’s also on getting drivers to follow the rules and lower risks.
Similar operations have been running in Kuching, Kota Samarahan, and other districts. Officers have also been checking express buses and commercial vehicles, making sure they meet safety standards before carrying passengers. With more people travelling, these checks carry extra weight.
At the national level, JPJ has stepped up monitoring with drone surveillance. In the first few days alone, thousands of offences were recorded, including risky overtaking, misuse of emergency lanes, and ignoring traffic signals. Those cases are now moving through enforcement channels.
The department has paired these efforts with awareness campaigns, working with local groups and fuel stations to remind drivers to prepare before long trips. Keeping documents valid and vehicles in good condition remains a key message.
JPJ Sarawak’s stance is straightforward. Stay cautious, keep your paperwork up to date, and make sure your vehicle is roadworthy. With traffic picking up during the festive season, safer roads depend on drivers doing their part.
