MIRI – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak, through its Miri Branch, has intensified enforcement under Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri (HRA) 2026, carrying out patrols and monitoring across Miri town to ensure compliance with road regulations during the festive season.
The operation, conducted on Friday, 27 March 2026, saw inspections carried out on 270 vehicles of various categories.
JPJ officers identified several violations, including motorists driving without a valid Competent Driving Licence (CDL), drivers operating without a Goods Driving Licence (GDL), and vehicles transporting hazardous loads. Other offences included failure to wear seat belts and technical issues relating to vehicle roadworthiness.
In a notable case, a lorry was seized after being found to have an expired Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM) and no insurance coverage.
JPJ confirmed that appropriate legal action was taken against the driver and vehicle owner in line with current legislation.
Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing road accidents and ensuring smoother traffic flow during festive periods, when travel activity typically increases.
JPJ Sarawak has been conducting similar operations across its branches, reflecting a consistent approach to road safety enforcement throughout the state.
Officials highlighted that the campaign is not only about enforcement but also about raising awareness among road users.
JPJ officers have been engaging with motorists to stress the importance of adhering to traffic laws, wearing safety equipment, and ensuring vehicles are properly maintained.
The department reiterated its commitment to intensifying enforcement during the festive season, noting that proactive measures are essential to safeguard lives and prevent avoidable incidents.
“JPJ Sarawak will continue to be committed to intensifying enforcement throughout the festive season to ensure that the safety of road users is always guaranteed,” the statement read.
Road safety remains a pressing issue in Malaysia, with festive seasons often linked to higher accident rates.
National statistics show that enforcement campaigns, combined with public education, play a significant role in reducing fatalities and improving compliance.
JPJ’s actions in Miri are therefore aligned with broader national strategies to promote a culture of safe driving.
As Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaches, JPJ has urged all motorists to ensure their documents are valid, vehicles are roadworthy, and safety measures such as seat belts and helmets are properly observed.
The department emphasised that collective responsibility is vital to achieving safer roads for everyone.
