JPJ Sarawak and Sabah Strengthen Road Safety Through Joint Ops

MIRI – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ Sarawak) and the Sabah Road Transport Department (JPJ Sabah) have strengthened their enforcement cooperation through a joint Cross-Border Ops conducted on 4–5 March 2026.

KM.1 was one of several key points where the operation took place. Jalan Kubong in Limbang, Jalan Marina in Miri and Jalan Kuala Baram at Sungai Tujoh. Blockades were established to ensure traffic regulations are followed, monitoring commercial and personal vehicles.

A total of 1,209 vehicles were inspected during the two days. The authorities caught offenders for various offences, such as driving without a valid licence and carrying excessive loads.

Other offences include expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), no insurance coverage, breaches of Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) permit terms and technical faults on vehicles. Offenders were subsequently served notices of non-compliance.

The joint operation was an approach that could enhance enforcement effectiveness while building stronger cooperation between enforcement sleuths in Sarawak and Sabah, officials explained. The two departments plan to combine resources and expertise in an effort to build a stronger enforcement network in border regions.

JPJ Sarawak stated its appreciation for the commitment of JPJ Sabah and said that such cooperation reflects a shared responsibility in ensuring road users are safe. As part of their ongoing mission to uphold the standards of road safety, the department highlighted that such integrated operations will only be consolidated in the future.

The issue of cross-border enforcement is also a crucial one in locations like Limbang and Miri, where there are high levels of traffic between Sarawak and Sabah. While vehicle movement and trans-state travel may assume risk in areas falling outside road laws, compliance helps mitigate some of these factors.

Authorities pointed out that the initiative was not just to punish those who commit the offence but also to create awareness among road users. By implementing visible enforcement operations, JPJ aims to promote greater responsibility and compliance with traffic laws.

The operation also highlights Sarawak’s wider commitment to road safety, in keeping with national efforts to reduce accidents and enhance transport efficiency. Officials stressed “the importance of everyone complying with the regulations which serve to protect lives and facilitate smooth traffic movement.”
