Drug-Positive Suspect Arrested for Solar Lamp Theft in Kabong

KABONG — Police from the Saratok District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD Saratok) successfully arrested a male suspect believed to be involved in the theft of a solar lamp and panel at Pantai Tanjung Kembang, Kabong, late last week.

According to Saratok District Police Chief, DSP Mathew Anak Manggie, the incident was reported after the complainant noticed a man, known personally to him, fleeing the scene on a motorcycle around 11.30pm on 3 October 2025. The man was suspected of stealing a MASTER 60W solar lamp unit complete with its solar panel, valued at approximately RM300.

Following swift investigations, a police team from JSJ IPD Saratok launched an operation the next day and successfully arrested the suspect, identified as Met Bin [redacted], a 41-year-old Malay male. Subsequent urine tests found the suspect positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, and background checks revealed he had four previous criminal records.

During questioning, the suspect led investigators to the location where he had hidden the stolen items — next to his residence in Kabong. Police successfully recovered the stolen solar lamp and panel, bringing the case to a quick resolution.

Investigations revealed that the suspect admitted to stealing the items with the intention of selling them to fund his drug habit. The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

DSP Mathew commended the swift action of his officers, stressing that Saratok police remain committed to ensuring community safety and tackling theft and drug-related crimes in rural areas.

“We will not compromise with those who disturb public peace or engage in criminal acts for personal gain. The people’s cooperation in providing timely information has greatly assisted our investigations,” he said.

The suspect remains in police custody for further investigation.
