MATU – The long-delayed Kampung Bawang Road construction project has officially been terminated after the contractor failed to complete the work despite being granted several extensions.
The project, which began more than four years ago, had reached 81 percent completion but was categorised as a “sick project” due to repeated delays.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) and State Assemblyman for Jemoreng, Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya, confirmed that all rescue efforts had failed to deliver results.
He explained that the project should have been completed two years ago under the original schedule, but persistent setbacks had disrupted progress and affected the daily lives of local residents.
Speaking during a site visit, Dr Juanda stressed that Jalan Kampung Bawang is a critical piece of infrastructure for the community.
The road is intended to serve as an alternative route while also reducing flood risks that frequently impact the area.
In addition, the project is expected to open up new land for development, potentially boosting local economic activities.
“The project is a basic need of the people and I hope that the re-tendering process can be expedited for the well-being of the local residents,” he said, urging swift action to resume construction.
The Public Works Department (PWD) issued a formal termination letter to the contractor in early January 2026.
Authorities have indicated that the re-tendering process will be initiated immediately to ensure the project continues without further delay.
Dr Juanda emphasised that the prolonged delay has not only inconvenienced residents but also hindered broader development opportunities in the area.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that infrastructure projects are completed responsibly and on time.
Local representatives, including Mukah PWD officer Awang Dasuki Awang Dol and Matu District Assistant Officer Zaraina Sahari, were present during the site inspection. Their attendance underscored the importance of the project to both district and divisional authorities.
The termination and re-tendering of the Kampung Bawang Road project highlight the government’s determination to address problematic contracts and ensure that rural communities benefit from essential infrastructure.
Officials hope that with a new contractor, the project can finally be completed to meet the urgent needs of residents.
