The RM699,224.68 project, fully funded by the State Disaster Committee (Serian Division), was completed on 8 August 2025 and officially handed over on Tuesday in the presence of Deputy Transport Minister (Air & Road) and Mambong State Assemblyman, Datuk Dr. Jerip Susil. The works were carried out by SEDC Quarries Sdn. Bhd., under the supervision of the Serian Public Works Department (JKR).

The project began on 23 May 2025 and was delivered to the affected homeowner, Catherine Tuyah Bidi, whose property was previously at risk.

Speaking at the handover, Dr. Jerip said the swift execution of the retaining wall underscores the government’s commitment to citizen safety, particularly in areas vulnerable to natural disasters.

“The state government is always sensitive to the needs of the people and will ensure that swift steps are taken to prevent a repeat of the tragedy. This project is proof of the priority given to the well-being of residents, especially in rural areas,” he said.

Beyond immediate protection, the retaining wall also serves to strengthen local infrastructure and provide peace of mind to villagers who have long-faced the threat of soil movement.

Also in attendance was Ir. Ts. Chiresly Francis Kurang, the Serian Division Public Works Engineer, who oversaw the project’s technical aspects.

The initiative reflects Sarawak’s broader push to fortify rural infrastructure while addressing disaster risks, ensuring that communities like Kampung Duras can continue to live safely and sustainably.
