PADAWAN – The newly unveiled Kampung Punau Monument is more than just a landmark; it is a proud emblem of the Bidayuh community’s cultural identity, heritage and history.
Built at a cost of RM5,000 through the initiative of the Padawan Subdistrict Office, the monument stands tall as a reminder of the deep-rooted values and traditions passed down through generations in Kampung Punau.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Transport (Air and Road) and Mambong Assemblyman (ADUN), Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, said in his speech that such heritage symbols are crucial in keeping local culture alive amid rapid development.
“This monument reflects not just physical presence, but the enduring spirit of unity, tradition and identity that defines Kampung Punau,” said Dr Jerip. He also stressed the importance of preserving customs, traditions and traditional foods to prevent them from disappearing in the face of modernisation.
To further support grassroots efforts, he announced an allocation of RM30,000 to the Kampung Punau JKKK for cultural and community-based programmes.
Meanwhile, Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin highlighted the need for continued collaboration between community leaders and government agencies in addressing rising rural issues, particularly the threat of online gambling.
The launch of the monument coincided with the closing of Gawai Dayak 2025, featuring traditional feasts, cultural performances and souvenir presentations, all reflecting the spirit of unity and shared heritage.
This initiative not only strengthens Kampung Punau’s identity as a cultural reference point for Bidayuh heritage, but also reflects the Sarawak Government’s commitment to preserving rural identity while progressing with development.
