MUKAH – Residents of Kampung Sau are now benefiting from newly upgraded jetty facilities, following the early completion of a government-funded project aimed at improving rural infrastructure.
The RM300,000 Kampung Sau Jetty Upgrading Project, initially scheduled for completion in March 2026, was finalised on 27 November 2025, allowing villagers to use the facilities several months ahead of time.
Balingian State Assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to providing safe and comfortable infrastructure, particularly in rural communities.
He noted that the upgraded jetty will not only ease river transportation but also support local economic activities.
“Apart from facilitating river transportation, these facilities also support the smooth running of the villagers’ economic activities,” Abdul Yakub said during the handover ceremony on Friday.
He encouraged residents to make full use of the facilities and ensure proper maintenance to guarantee long-term safety and durability.
Following the ceremony, Abdul Yakub inspected the jetty alongside the contractor and implementing agency to confirm its readiness for public use.
The project is part of broader efforts to enhance connectivity and infrastructure in Sarawak’s rural areas, where river transport remains vital for daily life and economic exchange.
Improved facilities such as jetties are seen as crucial in supporting fishing, trade and mobility for communities living along riverbanks.
Local leaders welcomed the development, with Village Chief Sau Mazlan Abdullah and Councillor Semaon Yusuf present at the ceremony to witness the official handover. Their attendance underscored the importance of the project to the community.
Infrastructure upgrades like the Kampung Sau jetty are aligned with Sarawak’s wider rural development agenda, which prioritises accessibility, safety and economic sustainability.
The early completion of the project demonstrates effective coordination between government agencies and contractors, ensuring that residents can enjoy the benefits sooner than expected.
