KAPIT – The welfare of Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) veterans in Kapit has received a boost with the inauguration of a newly built canopy and porch at the Kapit Branch ATM Veteran House on Saturday.
The facility upgrade, carried out by the Kapit Branch of the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM), aims to improve comfort for members while providing a more suitable venue for gatherings and welfare-related activities.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law and Native Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, officiated the ceremony and praised the association for successfully completing the project.
He noted that the improvements would enhance the role of the Veteran House as a hub for community engagement and support.
“The Sarawak Government is always committed to supporting veteran welfare through various initiatives, including facility assistance and the provision of grants to PVATM Kapit,” he said.
Datuk Jefferson also highlighted the sacrifices made by ATM veterans in safeguarding national security and sovereignty. He stressed that their contributions continue to inspire patriotism and strengthen unity within the community.
The canopy and porch project reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to empowering veterans through practical support and infrastructure development.
By providing improved facilities, the government and PVATM aim to ensure that veterans have a conducive environment to gather, share experiences, and access welfare programmes.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Watson Awan Jalai; Kapit Division Resident, Elvis Didit; Kapit District Officer, Thomas Geoffrey Kendawang; members of PVATM Kapit; and other invited guests.
The inauguration underscores the importance of continuous collaboration between government agencies and veteran associations in enhancing welfare support.
For the Kapit Division, the upgraded Veteran House stands as a symbol of appreciation for the service and dedication of ATM veterans, while reinforcing community solidarity.
