Kapit Hospital Urgently Needs Upgrade to Address Overcrowding

KAPIT: Kapit Hospital requires immediate upgrades to accommodate the growing demands of patients and healthcare workers, according to Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Native Law and Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat.

Speaking during a working visit by Deputy Secretary-General (Finance) of the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), Dato Zahrul Hakim Abdullah, on Wednesday, Jamit emphasized the urgency of addressing the hospital’s challenges, including limited space, patient overcrowding, and operational constraints.

Jamit revealed that Kapit Hospital has developed a comprehensive upgrade plan, which includes constructing a new building. He urged the Ministry of Health Malaysia and the Sarawak Ministry of Health to expedite approval for the proposal. “If approved, this plan will resolve long-standing issues, ensuring better healthcare services for the community,” he said.

The visit began with a briefing by Kapit Hospital Director Dr. Francis Lee Ngie Ping, followed by an inspection of the hospital’s wards and treatment rooms. Dato Zahrul Hakim Abdullah spent approximately an hour assessing the facility’s conditions, highlighting the critical need for modernization to cope with the rising patient load. The delegation concluded the visit with lunch at Rahmat Café.

Jamit underscored the importance of collaboration between state and federal governments to address these pressing healthcare needs. “The increasing number of patients has outgrown our current facilities. I take this matter seriously and hope for swift action to improve the well-being of Kapit’s residents,” he said.

The visit provided a vital opportunity to showcase the hospital’s challenges to MOH officials, paving the way for accelerated efforts to enhance healthcare services in Kapit Division.
