KUCHING: The Sarawak Media Sports Carnival (KASUMeS) will officially become an annual event in conjunction with National Journalists’ Day, serving as a platform to promote stronger ties between the state government and media professionals.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, announced that the event, organised by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), is not only focused on recreation and wellness but also on strengthening professional and personal relationships between the state and its media fraternity.
“We will continue this programme every year during National Journalists’ Day, rotating between zones such as Miri, Sibu and Kuching. For now, it includes events like pickleball, badminton, and futsal,” he said during the KASUMeS 2025 Opening Ceremony held at Pickleball MUSC Sarawak on Tuesday.
UKAS Director Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan was also present.
Datuk Abdullah further revealed plans to include more dynamic and adventurous activities in future editions, including mountain climbing, jungle trekking, and visits to remote heritage locations like Bakun and Mulu.
“These kinds of programmes offer a relaxed space for us to connect beyond press conferences and formal events. God willing, we’ll explore more unique activities,” he said.
He encouraged each media agency to establish an official sports team and suggested forming a sub-committee of media representatives to support UKAS in planning future events.
Datuk Abdullah also called on media professionals to remain a vital strategic partner of the state government in disseminating accurate and ethical information to the public.
“I hope our media continues working closely with the government to communicate Sarawak’s initiatives and policies clearly to all levels of society,” he emphasised.
KASUMeS 2025 successfully brought together journalists from various print, broadcast, and digital platforms in a friendly and active environment, reinforcing unity and camaraderie within Sarawak’s media community.
