Katibas River Awareness Program Draws Crowd, Emphasises Clean Water and Safe Transport

KAPIT – Over 200 residents gathered at Rumah Panjang Sinau ak Jangan in Batu Labang for the Katibas River Safety and Cleanliness Awareness Program, a two-day event organised by the Sarawak Rivers Board (LSSS), Song Branch, aimed at highlighting the critical role rivers play in rural life.

The launch ceremony, held on Saturday, was officiated by Katibas ADUN Lidam Assan, and attended by Sarawak Rivers Board Chairman and ADUN Daro Safiee Ahmad, along with senior government agency officers.

The programme seeks to educate communities about proper river management, safety practices, and environmental sustainability.

“Rivers are not only a source of food and clean water, but also a vital transportation route for rural communities,” said Safiee.

He also reminded attendees of the importance of wearing safety jackets and avoiding overloading when using river transport.

“Taking care of our rivers is a continuous responsibility, not a one-time effort,” he added.

Tuai Rumah Sinau Jangan, in his welcome address, thanked the organisers for selecting his longhouse as the venue and acknowledged the growing awareness among his community.

In his speech, Lidam Assan praised the initiative, calling it a vital tool for educating people on the ecological and economic importance of Sarawak’s rivers.

“The cleanliness of our rivers reflects the quality of our lives. I also commend today’s symbolic release of baby fish, including the prized Suddenly, to preserve native species like Empurau, Semah, and Tengadak,” he said.

Lidam also announced a RM6,000 allocation per door for the 23 doors of Rumah Panjang Sinau, amounting to RM138,000, to support renovation works. In addition, a RM5,000 grant was approved for the JKKK as encouragement to continue organising impactful community programs.
