The event, staged at the festival’s main platform on Sunday morning, drew enthusiastic participation from children and families.

The Little Prince and Princess Mukah Kaul 2026 Contemporary Melanau Clothing Fashion Competition was organised by KEMAS Mukah, whose efforts were acknowledged for ensuring the smooth running of the programme.

The contest provided young participants with an opportunity to showcase creativity while honouring cultural identity, blending modern design with Melanau influences.

Among those present were Tellian Assemblyman YB Royston Valentine, accompanied by his wife; YB Abdul Yakub Arbi, Chairman of the Mukah Kaul Festival 2026 Main Committee; and YB Dato Sri Dr Stephen Kalong Ningkan.

Their attendance underscored the importance of community engagement in sustaining cultural traditions.

Mukah District Officer Mr Peleadzman, son of Ahip, also joined the gathering, alongside parents, visitors and supporters who contributed to the lively atmosphere.

The Kaul Mukah Festival itself is a longstanding cultural celebration in Sarawak, rooted in Melanau customs that emphasise gratitude, unity and respect for nature.

Over the years, the festival has evolved to include modern elements such as fashion shows, concerts and exhibitions, while retaining its ceremonial core.

The inclusion of children’s competitions reflects a deliberate effort to pass traditions to younger generations in engaging and accessible ways.

Fashion competitions at the festival have become a platform for creative expression, encouraging participants to reinterpret Melanau attire with contemporary flair.

This year’s event highlighted how cultural heritage can be preserved while adapting to modern tastes, reinforcing the festival’s role as both a cultural anchor and a space for innovation.

Community leaders emphasised that such initiatives not only celebrate identity but also strengthen social bonds.

The presence of dignitaries and local officials illustrated the festival’s significance in promoting cultural pride and regional unity.

By supporting events like the fashion competition, organisers aim to ensure that Melanau traditions remain relevant and appreciated across generations.

The Kaul Mukah Festival continues to attract visitors from across Sarawak and beyond, serving as a showcase of cultural resilience and creativity.

With its blend of traditional rituals and modern programmes, the festival remains a vital part of Sarawak’s cultural calendar, reinforcing Mukah’s role as a centre of Melanau heritage.
