KEMAS Quick Win Food Stall Course Boosts Rural Skills and Economy

BINTANGOR – The Quick Win Food Stall Skills Course organised by the Community Development Department (KEMAS) has been hailed as a vital initiative to strengthen the economic resilience of rural communities in Sarawak. The programme, which targets youth, women, and housewives, aims to equip participants with practical skills to venture into food-based entrepreneurship.

Speaking at the Postponement and Handover Ceremony of the Sarikei Division KEMAS Quick Win (Food Stall) Skills Course Equipment Kit 2025 at Dayang Bai Bintangor Hall, Meradong State Assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to empowering rural communities through human capital development.

“The food entrepreneurship field is always popular and has great potential. With the right training and guidance, participants will not only be able to start their own businesses but can also help strengthen the economy of rural communities,” he said.

The Quick Win programme provides participants with both skills training and equipment kits, enabling them to immediately apply their knowledge in small-scale businesses. This approach is designed to accelerate income generation and reduce dependency, while also fostering a more competitive and independent society.

Datuk Ding urged participants to fully utilise the knowledge and resources provided, stressing that the benefits should extend beyond individuals to families and the wider community. He added that the state government consistently supports initiatives that enhance community well-being, economic independence, and social unity.

The Quick Win programme has already demonstrated significant impact across Sarawak. Since its introduction in 2017, it has benefited nearly 2,000 women entrepreneurs statewide, providing them with the tools and confidence to establish sustainable businesses. According to the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, the programme focuses on five key sectors, with food entrepreneurship being one of the most in-demand areas.

Observers note that food stalls and small-scale food businesses remain a cornerstone of rural economies, offering accessible opportunities for income generation. By formalising training and providing start-up support, KEMAS is helping to professionalise this sector and ensure long-term sustainability.

The ceremony in Bintangor was also attended by Sarikei Division KEMAS Assistant Officer Banggie Munjap, Sarikei Division Health Office representative Sia Fong Shin, Sarikei Fire and Rescue Department representative Arrahman Chik, and Sarikei District MARA representative Saftuiyah Berawi.

The Quick Win Food Stall Skills Course is expected to continue expanding its reach, equipping more rural Sarawakians with the entrepreneurial skills needed to thrive in today’s competitive economy.
