MERADONG – Long-standing water supply issues in the Jalan KJD Bintagor area are close to being resolved with the commencement of a 600mm diameter pipe upgrade project, aimed at stabilising and improving water flow to affected communities.
Meradong State Assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing confirmed that the project, approved by the Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Ministry, involves replacing ageing pipes from the Bintangor Highway exit to the pressure boosting station.
The upgrade will significantly increase water delivery capacity from Bayong to the high reservoir tower at Mile 13, Jalan KJD.
Datuk Ding explained that the project is scheduled for completion within 12 months, but efforts are being made to expedite the work to ensure residents receive adequate water supply sooner.
“This project is expected to completely solve the water supply problem that has long affected residents of longhouses along Jalan KJD,” he said during a dialogue session with community leaders at the Meradong District Office Meeting Room on Tuesday.
He highlighted that the main challenge lies in the difference in pipe capacity along critical routes. “The 600mm pipe only reaches the highway exit junction near the Bintangor High Bridge. However, from the junction to the pressure boosting station, the pipe used is still 280mm in diameter,” he explained. This mismatch has prevented optimal water flow to the KJD area.
Datuk Ding expressed appreciation to JBALB Sarikei, which has introduced several short-term measures, including the use of direct pumps to assist in distributing water to longhouses.
JBALB has also committed to delivering clean water supplies to households that have yet to receive stable access while awaiting the full completion of the upgrade project.
It is understood that between 20 to 30 longhouses along Jalan KJD have been affected by low water pressure and shortages for an extended period.
The new project is expected to provide a permanent solution, ensuring consistent water supply and improving the quality of life for residents.
The initiative reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to strengthening rural infrastructure and addressing essential needs in communities across the state.
