KOTA SAMARAHAN – The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council organised a Fire Safety Briefing and Building Evacuation Drill on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, at its council office.
The exercise was designed to strengthen awareness among staff and visitors about emergency procedures, ensuring that everyone is prepared to respond effectively in the event of a fire.
The briefing covered essential safety measures, including the proper use of fire extinguishers, identifying evacuation routes, and understanding the importance of remaining calm during emergencies.
Council officials emphasised that such drills are not only a legal requirement but also a vital component of workplace safety.
By practising evacuation procedures, employees gain confidence in handling unexpected situations, reducing the risk of panic and confusion.
The drill involved a full-scale evacuation of the building, with staff guided to designated assembly points outside the premises.
Safety officers monitored the process closely, assessing the speed and efficiency of the evacuation. Feedback was later provided to highlight areas for improvement and reinforce best practices.
Fire safety experts have long stressed the importance of regular drills in public offices and institutions. According to national safety guidelines, organisations are encouraged to conduct evacuation exercises at least once a year to ensure readiness.
The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council’s initiative reflects its commitment to safeguarding both employees and visitors.
The briefing also included demonstrations on fire prevention strategies, such as maintaining clear exits, avoiding electrical overloads, and reporting hazards promptly. Staff were reminded that vigilance and preparedness are key to preventing accidents and protecting lives.
Community leaders welcomed the council’s proactive approach, noting that such measures contribute to a culture of safety across Kota Samarahan.
The council’s efforts align with broader state initiatives to enhance disaster preparedness and resilience in Sarawak.
By conducting the drill, the council reinforced its responsibility as a public institution to prioritise safety. The event served as a reminder that preparedness is essential and that collective participation ensures the well-being of all.
