KUCHING, Jan 5 — A 50-year-old man has been remanded for seven days by the Magistrates’ Court here to assist police investigations into a murder and an attempted murder at a Chinese cemetery along Jalan Lumba Kuda, Kota Sentosa. The case has drawn public attention due to its violent nature and the fact that it involved members of the same family.
The remand order was granted by Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan on Monday following an application by the investigating officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Sylvarius Gopog. The remand period will run until Jan 12 to allow police sufficient time to complete their investigations. The suspect was not represented by legal counsel during the court proceedings.
Police are investigating the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 307 for attempted murder. Both sections carry serious penalties upon conviction, reflecting the gravity of the alleged offences. Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the suspect’s background or possible motive at this stage, as investigations are still ongoing.
Earlier media reports stated that the incident came to light after the body of a 67-year-old man was discovered at the Chinese cemetery on Saturday. The victim, who was believed to be working at the cemetery, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. His sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly among those familiar with the area.
The tragedy deepened when it was revealed that the victim’s 34-year-old son had also been attacked during the same incident. He reportedly sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Sarawak General Hospital, where he was said to be in critical condition. Medical staff are continuing to monitor his condition closely.
On the same day as the discovery, police also arrested a 28-year-old woman in a commercial area in Siburan. She was subsequently remanded the following day to assist with investigations. Police have not confirmed the relationship between the suspects or their alleged roles in the case, but they are believed to be connected to the incident.
The police have assured the public that they are taking the matter seriously and are working diligently to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the crime. Members of the public have also been advised not to speculate and to allow the authorities to carry out their duties.
