Kuala Lama Drainage Upgrade Begins Under RTP 2025

MUKAH – Work has officially commenced on the drainage upgrade project at Jalan Muhibah, Kampung Kuala Lama, under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2025 for the Tellian constituency. The project was formally handed over to the appointed contractor on Monday, marking the start of implementation.

The handover ceremony, held in Kampung Kuala Lama, was attended by representatives from the Mukah Drainage and Water Resources Department (DID), the implementing agency responsible for overseeing the works.

Also present were Tellian Community Service Centre Special Officer Jay Keram and Kuala Lama Community Leader Junaidi @ Yakub Usop.

The drainage system upgrade is expected to deliver significant benefits to local residents, particularly in addressing long-standing issues of poor water flow and flooding risks in the area.

By improving the drainage network, the project aims to enhance safety, reduce property damage during heavy rains, and improve the overall quality of life for the community.

Officials highlighted that the initiative is part of the Sarawak Government’s broader commitment to strengthening rural infrastructure through the RTP.

The programme has been rolled out across multiple constituencies to ensure that rural communities enjoy better facilities and improved living standards.

The Kuala Lama project is one of several infrastructure upgrades being implemented in the Tellian constituency, where residents have long requested improvements to drainage and flood mitigation systems.

According to reports, five villages in Tellian are set to benefit from simultaneous infrastructure projects under RTP 2025, including upgrades to walkways, bridges, and other essential facilities.

Community leaders expressed optimism that the drainage upgrade will not only solve immediate water management problems but also support future development in the area. Improved drainage is seen as a foundation for safer housing, better roads, and more resilient public spaces.

The RTP initiative reflects the state’s strategy to prioritise basic infrastructure development in rural areas, ensuring equitable growth alongside urban centres.

By focusing on drainage, roads, and utilities, the government aims to create a more balanced development model that uplifts communities across Sarawak.

With the contractor now on site, residents of Kampung Kuala Lama can expect visible progress in the coming months.

The project is anticipated to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable living environment for the local population.
