KUCHING – The popular Kuching Car Free Morning programme has returned, bringing renewed energy to the city’s weekends after a short break during Ramadan.
Organised by the North Kuching City Hall (DBKU), the initiative encourages residents to embrace a healthier lifestyle while enjoying the city’s urban environment free from motorised vehicles.
Running from 6.00 am to 10.00 am, the programme covers several key areas, including Padang Merdeka, Kuching Waterfront, Pangkalan Sapi, and the vicinity of Darul Hana Bridge.
The event provides opportunities for walking, jogging, cycling, and fitness activities, creating a vibrant and community-friendly atmosphere for families and individuals alike.
This year’s edition also featured the LCDA Sapphire Run 1.0, organised by the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) at Padang Merdeka.
The run was officiated by Datuk Haji Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister of Urban Development, Land Administration and Environment in Sarawak.
The event marked LCDA’s 45th anniversary, reflecting its commitment to engaging with the community through inclusive and healthy activities.
The Sapphire Run was divided into two categories, five kilometres and 10 kilometres, attracting more than 800 participants.
Male and female runners competed for cash prizes totalling RM10,000, adding a competitive edge to the community event.
Organisers highlighted that the run was not only about fitness but also about fostering unity and celebrating LCDA’s milestone.
Beyond physical health, the Car Free Morning initiative supports environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and air pollution in urban areas.
DBKU emphasised that the programme strengthens social interaction, encouraging citizens from diverse backgrounds to come together in a shared space.
Officials present at the event included Datu Abdullah Julaihi, Permanent Secretary of MUDeNR; Datu Sr Haji Zaidi bin Haji Mahdi, General Manager of LCDA; Dato Haji Hilmy bin Haji Othman, Mayor of North Kuching; and Datu Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmod, Director of the Land and Survey Department (JTS).
Their attendance underscored the importance of collaboration between government agencies in promoting community well-being.
DBKU has welcomed the participation of all Kuching citizens, encouraging them to continue supporting the programme as a platform for healthy living and environmental awareness.
The return of Car Free Morning reaffirms Kuching’s commitment to building a city that values wellness, sustainability, and togetherness.
