KUCHING – The Kuching Division Community Association hosted its annual Chinese New Year Dinner, drawing together community leaders, residents, and dignitaries in a celebration of unity and cultural tradition.
Representing the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, the Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Dato Wee Hong Seng, delivered a speech highlighting the importance of community associations in fostering social cohesion.
He emphasised that these organisations have long served as a cornerstone of Sarawakian society, offering support to vulnerable groups, promoting education, and preserving cultural heritage.
Community associations across Sarawak have historically played a vital role in strengthening bonds among diverse ethnic groups.
Their contributions extend beyond festive gatherings, often involving welfare initiatives, cultural programmes, and grassroots development projects.
This year’s dinner underscored their continuing relevance in bridging communities and promoting inclusiveness.
The mayor noted that the city’s progress is closely linked to the active involvement of community organisations.
He expressed gratitude for their cooperation with the City Council, acknowledging their role in making Kuching a more welcoming and vibrant place to live.
“Community associations have always been the warmest pillar of Sarawakian society,” he said, adding that their efforts have injected “powerful positive energy into Sarawak’s harmony and stability.”
The event was part of a wider festive season in Kuching, where numerous cultural activities were held to mark the Lunar New Year.
Street festivals, lantern-making workshops, and charity programmes such as the Sejambak Kasih Tahun Baru Cina initiative, which provided aid to thousands of recipients, reflected the broader spirit of giving and celebration across the city.
In addition, other gatherings, including the Chinese New Year Grand Gathering organised by the Kuching and Samarahan Division Singing and Entertainment Association, showcased the diversity of celebrations in the region.
That event, themed around the Year of the Horse, featured music and performances, further highlighting the cultural vibrancy of Sarawak.
The Kuching Division Community Association’s dinner was not only a festive occasion but also a reminder of the enduring values of inclusiveness and mutual assistance.
Leaders urged continued collaboration in the year ahead, reinforcing the message that collective effort is key to building a harmonious and progressive society.
As the evening concluded, well-wishes for prosperity, health, and happiness in the new year were shared among attendees, reflecting the enduring optimism that characterises Sarawak’s multicultural community.
