Held annually since late July, the festival has drawn thousands to enjoy street performances, traditional cuisines, expressive dances and creative exhibits that underscore Kuching’s vibrant heritage and community spirit.
Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng noted at a press briefing at the Kuching South City Council today that the event has “brought the community together through weeks of food, music, dance, cultural shows, and family activities”.
The festival’s grand finale, Meniti Cakerawala 2.0, is a unique collaboration between Malaysia’s trailblazing astrophysicist Tan Sri Mazlan Othman and internationally recognized dance icon Datuk Ramli Ibrahim. Performed by dancers from the Sutra Foundation, the presentation will transform the MBKS Theatre stage into a “living constellation,” seamlessly intertwining choreography, astronomy, musical score, poetic narration, and visual storytelling.

An eight-minute excerpt of the production has already earned acclaim on the world stage, having been showcased at New York’s prestigious Lincoln Center during the 35th New York Dance Festival. Hosting the full performance in Kuching is a source of local pride, according to Mayor Wee, who emphasized that the festival not only entertains but also “supports local businesses, showcases Sarawak’s rich heritage, and promotes tourism”.
Admission to Meniti Cakerawala 2.0 is free, with seating offered on a first-come-first-served basis. The show begins at 7:45 pm this Sunday at the MBKS Theatre, located in Kuching Park.
As the Kuching Festival draws to a close, this imaginative performance promises to leave residents and visitors alike with a memorable reflection on humanity’s cosmic origins and our shared place in the universe.
