MBKS Strengthens Ties with Guro, South Korea with New Road Name

KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will designate a new road within its municipality as Jalan Guro, creating a permanent landmark celebrating its decade-long friendship with Guro City in Seoul, South Korea. This act of reciprocity follows Guro City’s earlier initiative to name a street, Kuching South-ro in 2022.

The announcement was made by MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng during a recent courtesy visit to Guro District Mayor Jang In-hong.

The 600-meter-long road will stand as a physical symbol of the mutual respect and collaborative spirit between the two cities.

This latest development builds upon active cultural engagements. Just last month, a delegation from Kuching South attended the G-Festival and G-Valley Necktie Run in Guro.

The event featured a vibrant performance by the Sarawak Cultural Village dance troupe, showcasing local heritage to the Korean audience.

The sister-city relationship, established in 2013, has been strengthened through consistent youth and cultural exchanges since 2015.

These programmes, often featured at major events like the Kuching Festival and Guro Festival, aim to deepen people-to-people ties and foster mutual understanding.

Beyond culture, the cities are also committed to revitalising a 2019 business council agreement to enhance economic cooperation.
