KUCHING – The Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD Kuching) Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division carried out a targeted operation against drunk driving, known as Op Mabuk, between 11.30 pm on 30 April and 3.00 am on 1 May 2026.

The operation was led by one senior officer supported by 12 personnel, reflecting the police’s commitment to addressing road safety concerns during late-night hours.

Authorities emphasised that the initiative was part of ongoing efforts to reduce accidents and ensure compliance with traffic laws.

During the course of the operation, 65 vehicles and 65 individuals were inspected. Officers conducted SD2+ breathalyser tests on three motorists, with one man, aged approximately 47, testing positive for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was subsequently taken into custody for further action.

In addition to drunk driving checks, police also enforced broader traffic regulations. A total of 31 summonses under PDRM (K) 257 were issued for various offences, ranging from documentation irregularities to unsafe driving practices.

The enforcement highlighted the police’s dual focus on both alcohol-related offences and general traffic violations.

Op Mabuk is part of a wider strategy by IPD Kuching to strengthen road safety and reduce risks associated with irresponsible driving.

Similar operations have been conducted across Sarawak, particularly in urban centres, where nightlife and late-night traffic are more prevalent.

Police officials have consistently reminded the public that driving under the influence not only endangers the driver but also poses serious risks to passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.

Community leaders have expressed support for such initiatives, noting that visible enforcement helps deter reckless behaviour and reassures residents that authorities are actively safeguarding public safety.

The operation also underscores the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and the public, with officers encouraging citizens to report suspected drunk drivers to prevent accidents before they occur.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining regular enforcement activities, particularly during weekends and festive seasons when the risk of alcohol-related incidents is higher.

By combining targeted checks, public awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement, IPD Kuching aims to foster a culture of responsible driving and reduce the incidence of road accidents in the city.
