Man Arrested After Swinging Parang at Public Outside Kuching Mosque

KUCHING — A 25-year-old man was arrested after allegedly swinging a parang at members of the public outside a mosque in the Tabuan Lot area on 23 November 2025. The alarming incident left several civilians distressed as the suspect acted aggressively and ignored warnings from those around him.

Kuching District Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued by the Kuching District Police Headquarters. According to police, the suspect became violent and began waving the sharp weapon toward people gathered outside the mosque. His behaviour posed a serious threat to public safety, prompting immediate action by authorities.

Police officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving reports from witnesses. The suspect was successfully detained before any further harm could occur. Investigators are now looking into the motive behind the sudden outburst.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing serious injury with a dangerous weapon. The offence carries a punishment of up to 20 years in prison, along with the possibility of a fine or whipping upon conviction. Police described the matter as a serious criminal act that demands firm legal action.

ACP Alexson urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without speculation. He reminded the community that sharing unverified information can disrupt the investigation and cause unnecessary panic. The police also advised the public to stay alert and report any suspicious or high-risk behaviour immediately to prevent similar incidents.

He stressed the importance of emotional control, noting that aggressive actions not only endanger the individual involved but also place the community at risk. The Kuching District Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining safety and ensuring that such acts of violence are addressed swiftly and professionally.

The authorities have assured the public that continuous patrols and quick-response efforts will remain a priority to maintain peace and order in the area.
