KUCHING, March 2 – A total of 396 traffic summonses were issued by the police during a large-scale traffic operation called ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’, held at Jalan Lapangan Terbang, Kuching. This special operation started at 10.30pm yesterday and ended around 4am today.
The operation, led by a senior police officer, involved 27 officers and personnel from Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD) Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division. The main purpose of this operation was to stop illegal street racing, known locally as lumba haram, and ensure all road users follow traffic laws.

According to Kuching District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, a total of 168 motorcycles and 10 cars were stopped and inspected during the operation. From this, police seized 26 motorcycles under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987. These motorcycles were found to have been illegally modified and were sent for further inspection.

Besides vehicle checks, police also screened 182 individuals at the scene. As a result, 396 summonses were issued for various offences, including illegal vehicle modifications, expired licenses, failure to produce driving licenses, and other traffic violations.
ACP Mohd Farhan confirmed that similar operations will continue from time to time to maintain road safety and curb dangerous activities like illegal racing. He reminded all road users, especially motorcyclists, to follow the rules, avoid illegal modifications, and stop participating in illegal races that put everyone’s safety at risk.
“We also advise the public not to gather by the roadside in a way that disturbs traffic flow or creates unnecessary noise pollution,” he added.
Such operations are crucial in ensuring the roads are safe for everyone, especially at night, when illegal racing is more common. With the increasing number of road accidents caused by reckless driving and racing, the police are taking serious steps to prevent these dangerous behaviours before they lead to tragic outcomes.
