Grand Procession in Kuching Marks Sun Yat-sen Buddha’s 1,000th Birthday

KUCHING – A grand cultural and religious procession was held in Kuching to commemorate the 1,000th birthday of Sun Yat-sen Buddha, drawing large crowds and showcasing Sarawak’s rich multicultural harmony.

The celebration, which took place at Sheng De En Temple along Qingcao Road, brought together 157 participating groups featuring lion and dragon dance troupes, Hakka lion teams, floats, official generals, and cultural performers from various communities.

Among them were Indian drum ensembles and Malay representatives, reflecting the diverse and inclusive spirit of the event.

The colourful procession lit up the evening streets, accompanied by rhythmic drums and intricate performances that highlighted Sarawak’s vibrant unity through faith and tradition.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kuching South City Mayor Datuk Wong Hong Seng, Batu Lintang Councillor See Chee How, and Sarawak Chinese Association President Datuk Wong Liang Keat were among the dignitaries present to officiate the celebration.

They were joined by several local community leaders, who praised the event as a symbol of shared cultural heritage and religious tolerance.

Organisers also extended appreciation to the transportation and logistics teams for ensuring the parade’s smooth coordination and safety throughout the evening.

Observers noted that the celebration served not only as a religious occasion, but also as a testament to Sarawak’s enduring commitment to multicultural coexistence and interfaith respect.
