BAU – The Labour Street Tours programme has successfully reached the community in Bau Town, with a convoy of buses from the Sarawak Manpower Department (Jabatan Tenaga Kerja, JTK) touring the area to promote the Labour Go Rural Area Programme (LGRAP) 7.0.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness of government services by distributing promotional materials and engaging directly with residents. Through this outreach, the public was introduced to the wide range of services offered by JTK and agencies under the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA).
Residents had the opportunity to learn about workers’ rights, employer responsibilities, job opportunities, skills development, and social protection programmes. Officials explained that the tours were designed to ensure that communities in rural towns such as Bau are not left behind in accessing vital information and support.
The Labour Street Tours form part of LGRAP’s broader mission to bring government services closer to the people. By taking services directly to towns and villages, the programme reduces barriers to access and ensures that rural communities benefit from the same opportunities available in urban centres.
Community members welcomed the initiative, noting that it provided valuable insights into employment-related matters and government programmes. Many expressed appreciation for the direct engagement, which allowed them to ask questions and receive guidance tailored to their needs.
The Sarawak Manpower Department highlighted that the tours are not only about distributing information but also about building stronger connections between government agencies and the public. By engaging face-to-face, officials can better understand community concerns and adapt services accordingly.
KESUMA agencies participating in the programme emphasised the importance of raising awareness about workers’ rights and responsibilities. They noted that informed communities are better equipped to protect themselves in the workplace and to take advantage of opportunities for skills development and career advancement.
The Labour Street Tours in Bau also underscored the role of outreach in promoting inclusivity. By reaching out to smaller towns, the programme ensures that government services are accessible to all, regardless of location. This approach reflects the government’s commitment to equitable development across Sarawak.
Officials expressed optimism that the initiative would encourage more residents to engage with government programmes and take advantage of the support available. They reaffirmed that LGRAP 7.0 will continue to expand its reach, bringing services to more communities across the state.
The successful implementation of the Labour Street Tours in Bau demonstrates the effectiveness of direct engagement in raising awareness and strengthening community ties. It marks another step forward in the government’s mission to empower rural communities and ensure that development is inclusive and sustainable.
