BETONG – A landslide temporarily blocked the main road connecting longhouses in the Mujau Keranggas area on Wednesday, prompting swift action from local authorities to restore access.
The incident was reported to the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Betong District, which immediately dispatched personnel to monitor the situation and assess safety risks.
Their inspection confirmed that heavy rainfall from the previous afternoon until early morning had softened the ground, causing part of the slope to collapse and cover the road.
The landslide disrupted connectivity between two longhouses, raising concerns among residents who rely on the route for daily travel.
Continuous rainfall in the area has heightened the risk of similar incidents, particularly in rural districts where road infrastructure is vulnerable to weather conditions.
Following the report, the Public Works Department (JKR) mobilised a team to clear debris from the affected stretch.
Cleaning operations were carried out promptly, allowing the road to be reopened for all types of vehicles. APM Betong also installed warning tape at the site to alert road users and encourage caution.
Authorities have stressed the importance of vigilance during the current unpredictable weather. Residents are advised to exercise care when travelling through areas prone to landslides, especially routes near slopes and riverbanks.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by rural communities in Sarawak, where heavy rainfall often triggers landslides and flash floods. Such events not only disrupt daily life but also pose risks to safety and mobility.
The coordinated response between APM Betong and JKR highlights the effectiveness of joint efforts in ensuring public security and maintaining essential infrastructure.
Local leaders have reiterated that continuous monitoring and rapid intervention are crucial in reducing the impact of natural hazards.
The installation of warning signs and precautionary measures serves as a reminder for communities to remain alert and report any potential dangers to the relevant authorities.
As weather patterns remain uncertain, the public is encouraged to stay informed and prepared. Emergency services have assured residents that they remain ready to respond to similar incidents, reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Betong District.
