SARIKEI: This weekend, Member of Parliament for Sarawak, Dato Sri Len Talif Salleh, together with YB Yusuf Abd Wahab, had the honour of attending the traditional Hay Ceremony in conjunction with the Ngiling Bidai celebration. The event was held at two locations – the Hall of Penghulu Adin in North Sarikei during the morning session, followed by another gathering in the afternoon at Celestine Kiai Hall in South Sarikei.
The ceremony, deeply rooted in Iban culture, marks the end of the Gawai Dayak festival. Ngiling Bidai, which translates to “rolling up the mat,” symbolises the conclusion of the harvest season festivities and the resumption of daily life. It also serves as a time to express gratitude for blessings received and to look ahead with hope and unity.
Dato Sri Len Talif Salleh extended his heartfelt thanks to the local community for the exceptionally warm welcome and gracious hospitality shown throughout the celebrations. He expressed his admiration for the strong sense of unity and commitment to cultural heritage demonstrated by the people of Sarikei.
Also present at the ceremony were Miss Ainur Yazmin Zaini, Acting District Officer of the Sarikei Division; the Head of Bidai Anak Ngisang; and representatives involved in the house harvesting activities.
In his remarks, Len Talif Salleh emphasised the importance of preserving cultural practices like Ngiling Bidai as they play a crucial role in strengthening community bonds and passing on values to future generations.
He also conveyed his heartfelt wishes that this year’s Ngiling Bidai celebration brings peace, joy, and blessings to all who celebrate.
