LIMBANG – Authorities from the Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) Limbang Branch launched a targeted enforcement drive known as Ops Gempur on commercial vehicles in Limbang town on Thursday, 26 February 2026.
The initiative, led by the branch’s Operations Unit, involved thorough patrols and close surveillance across key areas of the district. This operation reflects JPJ’s ongoing commitment to upholding road transport standards in Sarawak, where commercial vehicles play a vital role in daily logistics and passenger services.
In total, officers examined 69 vehicles of different categories during the checks. The focus was on ensuring adherence to established guidelines, particularly those outlined by the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP).
Inspectors uncovered several breaches related to permit conditions imposed by the LPKP. These violations prompted the issuance of non-compliance notices to address the irregularities promptly.
This operation comes amid broader efforts across Sarawak to enhance road safety. Commercial vehicles, including lorries, buses, and taxis, must renew their licences annually through the LPKP, a body established under the Road Transport Act 1987 to regulate public service and goods vehicles.
The LPKP mandates strict criteria for vehicle roadworthiness, driver qualifications, and operational limits. For instance, permits specify maximum passenger loads, routes, and service frequencies, all aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring public safety.
In Limbang, a bustling border district near Brunei, heavy traffic from cross-border trade heightens the need for vigilance. Recent statistics from JPJ Sarawak indicate that commercial vehicle offences account for a significant portion of summonses issued statewide.
JPJ Limbang’s stance aligns with national directives from the Ministry of Transport, which prioritises proactive policing to curb reckless driving and mechanical failures. The department routinely conducts such patrols, especially during peak periods like holidays or festive seasons.
Operators caught flouting rules face penalties ranging from fines to permit suspensions or revocations. Repeat offenders risk harsher measures, including vehicle impoundment.
The public, particularly those running commercial fleets, have been urged to stay vigilant. Adhering to current laws not only avoids penalties but also promotes safer roads for everyone.
JPJ Limbang plans to continue these inspections regularly. Future operations may expand to rural outskirts and highways, targeting high-risk zones identified through data analysis.
This latest effort serves as a reminder of the importance of collective responsibility in road transport. As Limbang grows as a commercial hub, strict enforcement remains essential to balance economic activity with safety.
Local businesses have welcomed the move, noting that compliant vehicles reduce downtime from unexpected checks. Community leaders also support it, viewing it as a step towards fewer incidents on Limbang’s roads.
Residents and operators are encouraged to check vehicle documents and maintenance records ahead of travels. Resources like the JPJ MyJPJ app offer convenient ways to verify compliance status.
