Penang, Malaysia – Renowned Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic has called out AirAsia after spotting his iconic “Children on Bicycle” mural featured on the airline’s plane livery without his consent.
Taking to Instagram on November 22, 2024, Zacharevic shared a photo of an AirAsia plane at Penang International Airport. The photo revealed the replica of his famous George Town mural prominently displayed on the fuselage behind the cockpit. Alongside the image, the artist tagged AirAsia and its founder, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, saying: “I think we need to talk…”
The “Children on Bicycle” mural, first painted in 2012 on Armenian Street, has become one of Penang’s most recognizable pieces of street art. The artwork has drawn tourists from across the globe to the island’s UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Speaking to The Straits Times, Zacharevic expressed disappointment that AirAsia had used his mural without seeking permission. He added that this incident is not the first time his artwork has been used without consent.
“I first noticed it on my friend’s Instagram Story, and then I saw it myself at the airport on Friday,” he was quoted saying. Despite the situation, the artist clarified that he does not plan to pursue legal action but hopes to resolve the matter amicably with the airline.
The mural artist’s response has sparked a conversation among fans and art enthusiasts about intellectual property and respecting artists’ rights.
AirAsia has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
