PUSA – The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) has disbursed RM284,000 in assistance to members of the Layar Rimbas Area Fishermen’s Association (PNK), aimed at strengthening welfare and boosting productivity in Sarawak’s fisheries sector.
The allocation was presented by LKIM Chairman Muhamad Faiz Fadzil during the LKIM Chairman’s Social Rahmah Majlis Bersama Nelayan PNK Layar Rimbas 2026, held at Dewan Rahmaniah Kampung Pusa on Tuesday.
Of the total, RM234,000 was channelled through the Fishermen’s Living Allowance (ESHN) 2026, benefiting fishermen registered under the Layar Rimbas PNK.
A further RM50,000 was distributed under the Income Enhancement Programme, which provided incentives and fishing equipment to 32 recipients.
Among the items handed over were 30-horsepower outboard engines, drift nets and insulated fish boxes with a 100-litre capacity. These tools are expected to improve efficiency and support fishermen in increasing their catch.
Muhamad Faiz emphasised that the government remains committed to supporting the fishing community through initiatives designed to raise productivity and strengthen livelihoods.
He noted that Sarawak has considerable potential in fisheries, particularly in developing value-added products and seafood-based industries that can contribute to the state’s economic growth.
“Fishermen need to increase productivity and catch so that it can be developed as a high-quality food industry,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of fishermen’s associations diversifying their economic activities, in line with their role of driving both social and economic development within fishing communities.
LKIM, he added, will continue to implement development programmes to ensure fishermen benefit comprehensively while also contributing to the sustainable growth of Malaysia’s fisheries sector.
The assistance reflects ongoing efforts to uplift rural communities and strengthen Sarawak’s position as a key contributor to the nation’s seafood industry.
By providing modern equipment and financial support, the government hopes to empower fishermen to adapt to changing industry demands and improve their long-term resilience.
