LAWAS – The Sarawak State Public Works Department JKR yesterday received an official working visit from the Malaysian Highway Authority LLM to inspect the development progress of the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road Phase 1 project, a major infrastructure project to enhance connectivity between two states.
The delegation was headed by Yang Berbahagia Dato Ir. Hj. Dato’ Sazali bin Harun, Director General of the Malaysian Highway Authority together with Senior Directors and officials from various technical and administrative divisions. It was attended by a total of 11 representatives.
The Sarawak-Sabah Link Road, or popularly known as SSLR Phase 1, is a federal-state initiative that is touted as a proposed strategic project to provide better accessibility by road in the interior areas. The corridor is anticipated to play a significant role in driving economic opportunity, mobility and rural connectivity, including access to health and social services.
On arrival, the LLM delegation was welcomed by Ir. Wisil anak Lichok, Deputy Director of Infrastructure at JKR Sarawak on behalf the Director of JKR Sarawak. JKR Sarawak senior officers, SSLR1 project team members, and contractors and consultants were also in attendance.
The visiting program started with the detailed technical de-brief on SSLR Phase 1 project which included scope, aim and current progress status. The emphasis was laid on the use of MyArch System bridge technology to improve building process efficiency and construction quality in a difficult area.
A drone video was presented and provided the attendees with an opportunity to see what work has been completed along the project corridor. The visual update gave an overview of recent progress covering the works completed, underway works and predominant structures such as a new bridge that has already been finished.
During a knowledge exchange and Q&A session the two agencies could discuss elements of project delivery, engineering requirements and regulatory harmonisation. These meetings serve to reinforce institutional cooperation and the systematic application of good practices.
The delegation then proceeded to some of the key sites along SSLR, Phase 1. These visits allowed officials to see the progress for themselves and verify that construction was in compliance with technical specifications (including building code) and other safety related matters.
JKR Sarawak said the visit indicated a common dedication between the state department and Malaysian Highway Authority to undertake proper construction with integrity, quality and effectiveness of the SSLR project. That close partnership is necessary for massive infrastructure projects crossing state lines, the department said.
The SSLR has been described as a major scheme for the development of the interior regions of northern Sarawak and Sabah. Better road connections should promote commerce, shorten travel times and improve access to education, healthcare and jobs.
JKR Sarawak likewise expressed gratitude for the ongoing collaboration with LLM and hoped that this strategic partnership will also enhance national infrastructure development efforts, in line with more universal aspirations for a modern and inclusive Malaysia.
