Local Man Arrested for Diesel Oil Theft Caught on CCTV in Miri

Local Man Arrested for Diesel Oil Theft Caught on CCTV in Miri

In a swift action by Miri District Police, a local man was arrested on February 16, 2025, for allegedly stealing diesel oil from a telecommunications substation on Jalan Pantai. The arrest followed an investigation triggered by CCTV footage that captured the suspect’s actions.

The theft came to light when a diligent employee at the telecommunications substation reviewed the CCTV footage on Sunday morning. What they discovered was shocking— the suspect, in his 30s, was seen siphoning approximately 20 litres of diesel oil from the substation’s generator tank. He then transferred the stolen fuel into a barrel he was carrying.

Upon discovering the footage, the employee immediately filed a police report, prompting a thorough investigation by the Miri police force. Officers from the Patrol Unit (MPV) and the Criminal Investigation Division (BSJ) acted quickly and apprehended the suspect. During the arrest, the police also seized five plastic barrels and a hose, believed to have been used in the theft.

The incident occurred around 7.00 am that day when the suspect allegedly broke into the substation to carry out the crime. It’s understood that the suspect targeted the diesel oil as it is a valuable commodity for vehicles and machinery.

The suspect is now under investigation for trespassing under Section 447 and theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code. The authorities are continuing to gather more information on the matter.
