SIBU – The first dedicated pool for remote control (RC) powerboat racing in Malaysia will soon be constructed in Machan, Sibu. The RM700,000 project, to be built on the site of the old Machan guest house, is set to boost the niche sport while transforming the area into a recreational hub.
Announcing the initiative during the closing ceremony of the Sibu International RC Powerboat Race River Challenge 2025 on Sunday, Machan State Assemblyman (ADUN) Allan Siden Gramong said that preparations for the pool were underway, including land measurements, with plans to meet international standards.
“The exact dimensions will be confirmed after land surveying is complete, but we aim to comply with global specifications to attract more international interest in the future,” Allan stated.
The funding for the project comes under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) allocated for Machan. However, the implementing agency has yet to be finalised, as the project requires specific technical expertise.
Allan also revealed that there are plans to develop the surrounding area into a multi-functional leisure and commercial zone, including entertainment facilities and retail spaces to benefit the local economy.
Reflecting on the success of the four-day international RC powerboat competition, Allan noted that Sibu is now officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records for hosting the highest number of remote control race boats in a single event.
He praised the event as more than just a race, calling it a platform for fostering unity, sportsmanship, and community bonding. “This spirit must continue to grow as a foundation for even larger, more festive events in the future,” he said.
The project is expected to position Machan and Sibu as major RC powerboat racing destinations, potentially placing Malaysia on the international RC sports map.
