PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regional energy security during the ASEAN Energy Ministers’ Special Meeting held online on 27 April 2026.
The meeting focused on the ongoing crisis in West Asia and its potential impact on energy stability across Southeast Asia.
Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof, speaking from the Mutiara Meeting Room at Menara PETRA, outlined several measures Malaysia is implementing to safeguard national energy resilience.
These include subsidy rationalisation, the introduction of flexible working hours, and the promotion of energy-saving practices among the public.
He stressed that Malaysia fully supports ASEAN’s collective efforts to enhance existing mechanisms, expand expertise sharing, and coordinate responses to disruptions caused by geopolitical uncertainty.
“Close and integrated cooperation between member countries is the key to ASEAN’s energy security,” he emphasised.
The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of aligning national strategies with regional aspirations, particularly through the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative agreed upon last year.
The APG aims to create a more interconnected and resilient energy network across Southeast Asia, reducing reliance on external sources and mitigating risks from global instability.
Fadillah underscored that while Malaysia remains open to international cooperation, every step must be guided by a model rooted in national values and sovereignty.
He noted that inclusivity and balance are essential to ensure that energy transformation benefits all layers of society, bridging gaps between urban and rural communities.
The meeting concluded with ASEAN ministers agreeing to intensify collaboration and strengthen regional frameworks to safeguard energy supplies.
The discussions reflected a shared understanding that geopolitical tensions in West Asia could have far-reaching consequences, making proactive regional cooperation vital.
Malaysia’s stance highlights its determination to play a leading role in shaping ASEAN’s energy future, ensuring that progress is both sustainable and equitable.
