KUCHING – The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) took part in Malaysia Cleanup Day 2026 on 26 September, joining a nationwide cleanup initiative held in conjunction with World Cleanup Day.
The programme, organised by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), brought together communities and local authorities for activities focused on environmental cleanliness, waste management and recycling.
MPP participated through a live broadcast from the Taman Sri Harmoni Flats in Matang, working together with the Taman Sri Harmoni Rukun Tetangga (JKRT).
Activities at the residential area included a community cleanup around the flats, giving local residents an opportunity to work collectively to improve the cleanliness of their surroundings.
The programme also featured a “Buy Back Campaign” for recyclable materials and electrical and electronic waste.
Local residents additionally participated in the sale of used cooking oil, providing another avenue for household waste to be managed through organised collection and reuse initiatives.
The activities were designed to go beyond routine cleaning by encouraging residents to take part in recycling and responsible waste management practices.
The programme also provided an opportunity for residents to work directly with the local authority and community organisation in maintaining shared residential spaces.
Community participation is an important element of cleanup activities, particularly in residential areas where maintaining cleanliness involves the daily actions of residents as well as the services provided by local authorities.
Through activities such as recycling collections and the management of used cooking oil, residents can also play a role in reducing the amount of household waste requiring disposal.
The involvement of the Taman Sri Harmoni JKRT helped facilitate participation among residents during the programme.
MPP expressed its appreciation to the JKRT and residents of Taman Sri Harmoni for their cooperation and participation in the Malaysia Cleanup Day activities.
The council said maintaining clean surroundings is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation between local authorities, community organisations and residents.
Malaysia Cleanup Day 2026 was held as part of efforts associated with World Cleanup Day, providing a platform for communities to participate in environmental activities while raising awareness of responsible waste management.
At Taman Sri Harmoni, the combination of community cleaning, recycling collection and used cooking oil activities gave residents several ways to participate in the programme.
The event also reinforced the importance of continued community involvement in keeping residential areas clean and comfortable.
For the Matang community, the programme served as an opportunity to combine practical cleanup work with activities promoting recycling and more responsible household waste management.
