KUCHING – Sarawak has marked a milestone in Malaysia’s digital transformation journey with the launch of the country’s first AI Unmanned Mart, offering a fully autonomous shopping experience powered by artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and computer vision technology.
The initiative, introduced by the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), reflects the state’s ambition to accelerate its transition towards a cashless and data-driven economy under the Post Covid Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS2030) and the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030.
Officiating the launch at Baitulmakmur II, Petra Jaya, SDEC Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani described the mart as a significant achievement in embedding digital economy elements into everyday life.
“This is based on our AI and IoT technology. It will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 30 days a month and 365 days a year,” he said. He added that the mart, branded as the E-Mart Smart ‘Tap & Go Mart’, represents another step towards a more inclusive digital economy.
Operated by Akayan Solutions Sdn. Bhd, the mart uses AI-driven cameras, smart shelf sensors and machine learning algorithms to deliver a seamless shopping experience.
Customers simply scan a QR code via the SBOX AI app to enter, select items and leave without queuing at a checkout counter.
Payments are automatically processed through the SBOX AI Wallet, ensuring transactions remain fast, secure and cashless.
Dato Ir. Ts. Sudarnoto Osman, Chief Executive Officer of SDEC, said the launch signals a new chapter in Sarawak’s smart city aspirations.
“It shows how technology can be meaningfully harnessed to simplify the people’s daily affairs while supporting our long-term goal of building a digital and sustainable future,” he explained.
The mart is designed to operate continuously, providing round-the-clock access to groceries and essentials, while reducing reliance on manpower.
Its introduction is expected to set a precedent for future smart retail initiatives across Malaysia, aligning with global trends in autonomous shopping.
Also present at the launch was Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, Chief Executive Officer of the Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust Board, alongside other invited guests.
The AI Unmanned Mart is seen not only as a technological breakthrough but also as a practical demonstration of how digital innovation can enhance convenience, efficiency and inclusivity in everyday commerce.
