DILI – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was accorded an official ceremonial welcome at the Presidential Palace in Dili, Timor Leste, marking a significant milestone in Malaysia–Timor Leste relations.
The ceremony was highlighted by an inspection of the static guard of honour, symbolising the warm reception extended to Malaysia’s leader in conjunction with his official visit.
Following the ceremony, Anwar paid a courtesy call on the President of Timor Leste, Dr José Ramos-Horta. Both leaders then led their respective delegations in a bilateral meeting that touched on a wide range of potential areas of cooperation, including defence, health, communications, education, culture, visa exemptions, investment and trade.
The discussions also provided a platform to exchange views on bilateral ties as well as regional and international issues of common interest. Both parties described the talks as friendly and constructive, underscoring the mutual respect and shared aspirations between the two nations.
Speaking to the media, Anwar emphasised that the outcomes of the meeting were aimed at creating new synergies for the benefit of both peoples. “This visit not only strengthens Malaysia–Timor Leste friendship, but also opens a new chapter in strategic cooperation that can contribute to regional stability, prosperity and peace,” he said.
The Prime Minister also shared that Malaysia remains committed to supporting Timor Leste’s development journey while looking forward to enhancing cooperation in areas that would bring tangible benefits to citizens of both countries.
Observers note that this visit signals Malaysia’s readiness to play a stronger role in regional diplomacy and to reinforce its support for Timor Leste’s aspirations, especially in its path towards ASEAN membership.
With the groundwork laid during this official visit, both governments are optimistic about the future of bilateral cooperation and the opportunities it holds for advancing peace, stability and economic growth in the region.
