Man Arrested After Firing Shotgun to Scare Cable Thieves in Kuching

KUCHING, March 13 – A man was detained by the police on Wednesday night after he fired his shotgun into the air in an attempt to scare off two suspected cable thieves outside his house at Jalan Dogan.

Padawan police chief Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi confirmed that the two suspects were also arrested and are now being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for attempted theft.

Investigations revealed that the shotgun was legally owned, and the individual held a valid firearm licence. However, the police have now opened an investigation under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960 for discharging a firearm in a public area.

“Although the shotgun is legally registered, its use in a public space can lead to legal consequences,” Mohd Irwan stated.

Residents Alerted Police After Second Theft Attempt

According to reports, the two alleged cable thieves initially ran away after hearing the gunshot. However, shockingly, they returned later to continue their criminal activity. Concerned residents then called the police, leading to their arrest.

Mohd Irwan urged the public not to take matters into their own hands and to immediately report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

“Taking actions that could endanger yourself or others is not advisable. Instead, let the police handle the situation,” he added.

The case is currently under further investigation, and authorities remind the public to follow proper legal channels in dealing with crime. — The Borneo Post
