Man Arrested for Throwing Firework at Sarawak Stadium During Match

KUCHING, March 17 – A 33-year-old local man was arrested for allegedly throwing a firework onto the field at Sarawak Stadium during a football match between Kuching City FC and Selangor FC.

Kuching district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed the arrest in a statement, saying that the incident occurred on March 16 at around 10.50pm.

Firework Causes Panic During Match

According to the police, the suspect, who was seated in the spectator area, was seen throwing an object toward the field. Moments later, a loud explosion-like sound was heard, causing panic among fans and players.

Authorities immediately responded, leading to the arrest of the suspect during a security operation inside the stadium. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

Investigation Under Explosives Act 1957

The case is currently being investigated under Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a RM10,000 fine, or both, upon conviction.

ACP Mohd Farhan urged any witnesses who saw the incident to assist in the investigation by contacting Kuching IPD at 082-24444 or Investigating Officer Kipli Jeman at 019-6784444.

Call for Responsible Fan Behaviour

Football fans and the public are reminded to respect stadium safety rules and avoid reckless actions that could endanger others. Authorities are taking the matter seriously to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in future matches.
