MIRI: The Sarawak Government has officially greenlit the development of the Marudi-Mulu road, a transformative infrastructure project expected to be completed within two years.

The road, which will link Marudi directly to Mulu, promises to revolutionize access to two UNESCO World Heritage sites — Niah National Park and Gunung Mulu National Park — located in the Miri region. Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, highlighted that this initiative will not only enhance the state’s tourism appeal but also stimulate the local economy, particularly in the Miri area.

“Both Niah and Gunung Mulu National Parks have become major tourist attractions and the development of this road infrastructure will ensure a smoother, more efficient connection from Marudi to Mulu,” said Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari during a recent Hari Raya gathering. “Once the Marudi Bridge is completed, work on the new road from Marudi to Long Terawan and then to Mulu will begin. In two years, Miri will enjoy a one and a half-hour road link to Mulu, greatly benefiting locals and tourists alike.”

This key development is part of broader efforts by the Sarawak Government to improve regional connectivity. Abang Zohari also noted that Sarawak is focusing on improving its transport networks by land, sea, and air, which will strengthen the state’s strategic position. He revealed that the completion of a deep-sea port in Miri and the rebranding of MASwings to AirBorneo are integral parts of these initiatives.

“These advancements will support the tourism and service industries, especially in northern Sarawak. By the end of this year, we will have full ownership of AirBorneo, an airline that will play a critical role in bringing international tourists to Sarawak,” he said.

This project is expected to boost local tourism, making Mulu and Marudi more accessible and further promoting Sarawak as a key destination on the global tourism map. — UKAS EDITION
