Massive Verizon Fios Outage Hits US East Coast, Millions Left Offline

Massive Verizon Fios Outage Hits US East Coast, Millions Left Offline

A massive outage of Verizon Fios internet services has affected millions of users along the US East Coast. The disruptions, which began early on Tuesday morning (local time), have impacted major cities such as Boston, New York, and Washington. The outage spans a 500-kilometre stretch from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Richmond, Virginia.

According to Down Detector, users started reporting the issue in large numbers, with complaints reaching a peak between midnight and 2 a.m. EST. The heatmap of affected areas revealed that the problem is widespread, covering large swathes of the East Coast. Verizon, one of the largest wireless networks in the United States, serves 70% of the country with its LTE network, making the scale of this outage particularly concerning.

Frustrated customers took to social media platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter) to vent their frustrations. One user from Washington DC commented, “Verizon has all of us night owls and insomniacs in a tizzy because there’s an apparent outage, nationwide. It’s definitely here in DC, MD, and Virginia.” Another user said, “This Verizon internet outage seems unusual. Annoying also.”

As the outage continued, reports flooded in, with many people complaining about being unable to access the internet. Verizon’s official response came swiftly, stating, “There is either an outage or network maintenance impacting your area. We don’t have full details just yet. Our apologies for any inconvenience. We’re trying to get all the information from our network team.”

By early morning, the Down Detector reported that 90% of the complaints were related to internet services, while 9% described a “total blackout,” and 1% were linked to TV streaming issues.

Verizon Fios, a fiber-optic service, provides internet, TV, and phone services to millions across the country. With this widespread outage, many residents and businesses on the East Coast are facing significant disruptions to their daily routines. Verizon has yet to provide a timeline for when services will be restored.
