MATU – A bush fire along the roadside of Jalan Matu-Igan was successfully brought under control on Tuesday following swift intervention by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Fire and Rescue Department.
The District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) in Matu received two separate emergency calls reporting fires in nearby locations along the route.
Both incidents involved roadside vegetation catching alight, raising concerns about the potential spread to surrounding areas.
APM personnel were immediately deployed to the scene. On arrival, they confirmed that the blaze was confined to bushes on the edge of the road.
While awaiting the arrival of the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the Civil Defence members took early action to contain the flames, preventing them from spreading further.
The coordinated response ensured that the situation remained under control until JBPM officers arrived to carry out full extinguishing operations.
The fire was eventually put out without complications, and the affected area was declared safe. Authorities confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported.
The incident highlighted the importance of rapid communication between residents and emergency services, which allowed responders to act quickly and minimise risks.
Bush fires are a recurring hazard in Sarawak, particularly during dry spells when roadside vegetation becomes highly flammable.
Local officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any signs of fire immediately to prevent escalation.
The Matu District Civil Defence Force emphasised that community awareness and cooperation are vital in reducing the impact of such incidents.
By responding promptly, the agency was able to safeguard both motorists and nearby residents from potential harm.
This case reflects broader efforts across Sarawak to strengthen emergency preparedness and ensure that rural and semi-urban areas are adequately protected against environmental risks.
The Civil Defence has reiterated its commitment to maintaining readiness for similar emergencies, reinforcing its role as a frontline responder in safeguarding public safety.
